A little more subdued

My office is quite conservative... maybe not so much in terms of the choice of articles, but rather the colour palate.  Quite often I think many of the boys must wake up and thinking: "And what tone of white shall I wear with my charcoal trousers today".  Needless to say, after being eyed cautiously for yesterday's outfit, I thought it best to tone it back for today, even though I had been looking forward to trying pink and green together.  I'll save that outfit for another day...

The capris remained the only part from the outfit.  These capris alone had the potential to cause a bit of a stir.  For weeks, I had heard the story about some girl who was spotted wearing: "Red sneakers with WHITE CAPRIS".  While I'm not quite sure what caused this to be so shocking (this is, afterall, the province in which watermelons are worn as hats to sporting events), it did make me want to show up the next day in both my white capris and my red sneakers.  It may have been the middle of winter, so I refrained.

However, nary a comment was made.  I will admit I'm a touch disappointed.  Perhaps Friday, since it will be slow day around the office, I'll put on one of my three pairs of skinny jeans (which is the second most mocked article of clothing, after crocs in our coffee group) and see if it raises any stir.

For Eternity And Beyond!

I was going to wear this dress with a white shirt under it.  However, I currently hate my white button shirt, and am not willing to invest in another one... not to mention that white and this colour of green is a very pale look.  Needless to say, I decided to go to the extreme opposite end of the washed out plan.  In fact, I may have gone a touch overboard for my work place: I did receive some: "what the hell is she wearing" looks over the course of my day.  If anything good can come out of this, it is that when I asked Scott whether these colours worked together.  His response was: "Yes, they kind of remind me of a superhero"  That is, of course, where the blog title came from; however, it is notable for another reason.  When we were first trying to pick wedding colours (a feat we still haven't accomplished), I asked him what he wanted.  He seemed to have no idea. So finally, I asked him what his favourite superhero colour combination was, and that started the conversation.  Will we choose the light bright green, the saturated teal and the deep purple as wedding colours?  They seem to be in the lead.... this week.

Planning ahead

Last night, I sat down, took Sheila's advice, and planned multiple outfits for multiple weather circumstances.

And then I didn't have time to check the weather before I left for the day.  Let me tell you... 30 and humid (forecasted) is much different than 22 and windy (observed).  Needless to say, I was cold. All day.  I was warming my hands on the vents of my laptop.

I did, however, throw some accessories in my bag on the way out the door.  I wish the chain I'd grabbed was longer, and that I'd remembered a belt, but all together, Monday didn't completely fail!

(Also, I need to learn how to do stuff with the white balance).

And I was doing so well!

I was looking forward to coming home and posting an outfit pic.  And then randomly, we were hit by a deluge of rain, wind and hail.  The power has been out in our apartment for 6 hours now.  While it would be a fun little adventure in "indoor camping", this is the second time this week we've lost power (for 8 hours on Monday night? Tuesday night?).  It's really frustrating, especially since we're the northern most building without power in our complex... meaning that our neighbours across the street have their lights on.

Anyway, I've taken a picture, and if I had the proper software on this computer I could load it up... but I'm going to conserve my netbook battery for streaming tv shows (yeah for this city having free wifi!!!)

Blog Update

I'm not a tech genius, and I have a very short attention span.  As a result, setting up a new blog design is time consuming, and thus I never finish.

However, today, I persevered, and rectified a problem I had for a long time: I have finally added a blog roll.  I've always felt guilty poaching others' blog rolls for new feeds to read, and then never showing my appreciation from those whom I draw inspiration.

And not that you are not doing a good job, my inspiration well is running a little dry, so let's hope this new blog redesign spices things up.

For those of you using blog readers, don't worry, I didn't do anything that awesome to the page other than the blog roll.

Bright Contrast

There is something about bright pink mixed with a darker colour that I just love.  Of course that's probably why I'm gunning for bright pink and a deep purple to be Scott's & my wedding colours.  He's slowly warming up to it, but that's a whole other story.

I had every intention of soliciting Sheila's advice for big earrings today, except that we had a huge storm here last night, which caused not only a 7 hour power outage, but also a leak in our ceiling (add that to the one in our bathroom which the landlord had yet to fix, and you may begin to understand my attitude this morning).  Needless to say, I quickly got dressed and forgot the earrings.

I've tried getting outfits planned on Sundays, but inevitably that fails because the weather here is unpredictable and tends to vary by extremes.  I've tried getting outfits planned the night before, but inevitably, I get caught up in a TV show, or a project and forget until I'm in bed.  So I've been doing what Scott informs me most people do: deciding when I get up.

Any suggestions?

Just after I got back from the week off for the wedding, I got sick.  Of course, it had to happen - I didn't get much time off during my time off, and my body let me know.  I spent the previous day sleeping, and wasn't feeling 100% the next morning, but I knew I had a meeting I had already waited 2 months to have, so it was important to put my best foot forward.  Sure, my makeups understated, my hair is a little frizzed, and the outfit doesn't break any fashion barriers, but I managed to make it through the day without falling asleep at my desk, and yet still feeling comfortable enough to do so if needed!

I couldn't make the shirt underneath sit right all day, but I got the idea from what a prof was wearing the other day, so I might keep an eye out for the next time she wears it to see if I can figure it out.

Back at Work

This outfit was the first day back at work after a week off, and a lot of rain.  It was quite warm outside, so I figured I'd wear a skirt... but knew the office would be cold and went with a new cardigan I picked up when I was home for the wedding.  I love the idea of wearing blue, black and white, but I think I'll have to retire it for summer: it's a little dark.  I suppose I can always go with baby blue, grey and white!

And, for the record, between the skirt, and the lace on the back, I was freezing all day.  I'm not a warm person at the best of time, so having cold shoulder blades was definitely not a new experience... just a little strange that my arms were warm at the same time.

While still in "catch-up" mode, this is what I wore to Mosaic, which is essentially a cultural festival held at various venues through out the city.  We ate samosas in India, empanadas in Chile, drank Scottish mists in Scotland, and honey wine in Ethiopia.

The jeans and sweater are new, and impulse buys when we went to buy Scott some new jeans the other day.  Both of my articles together were half the cost of Scott's jeans, so I felt pretty good about it.  I am definitely glad to have this top: it's just enough me that I feel comfortable, but it's relaxed enough that I don't feel like a preppy when we go to Folk Fest this year.

PS - this is why you get poorly lighted pictures on blank backgrounds most of the time: the photographer that is around, isn't so good.

I'm slowly getting better at this

I'm now remembering to take pictures... just not loading them onto my computer, writing content, and posting.  But at least now I have some content to fall back on.

This is actually from the wedding that we were at this weekend.  Through twists and turns of fate (and brothers who just don't seem to care), I ended up as an usher.  In one of the most ultra-conservative Catholic churches I've encountered.  In a strapless dress.  With a very short skirt.  I was very glad to have made a shrug to go over my shoulders, and I did swap out the 4" heels with some silver ballet flats I purchased that morning.  Phew!  I knew being engaged to a groomsman would add responsibility on my shoulders, but I was hoping to be more behind the scenes.

Oh well, the wedding went quite well, and besides having a few bruises on my toes and a rather large scratch on the inside of my nose (the groomsmen's clip on ties clipped just at the level of my nose when I hug Scott), everyone survived relatively unscathed.

Scott, of course, was in full top hat and tails, which was fun to see (but something we're definitely skipping for our wedding), so I felt very modern next to his historic get up.

ps - Thanks to Jessica for posting the top pic on Facebook - it's the nicest picture of Scott and I from the night... we're not that photogenic unless we're being goofy... as evidenced by the second picture... for which I must thank Jill)

Capsule Wardrobe Day #5 - I survived!

I honestly didn't believe that I'd make it a week with only 5 articles of clothing.  And I've gotta hand it to this dress, it's what made me make it through... it was fun playing with different ways to wear it!

I'll also be honest... I'm away for a wedding (hence the need for a rehearsal dinner dress) so I took this picture on Wednesday, and wrote this post on Thursday.  Will I wear this?  I don't know... it's going to be rather rainy and cold.  However, I intend to wear this, so that's what counts...right?

Capsule Wardrobe Day #4 - Where it starts to get tough

How monotonous is this outfit?!?!!?!??!  I meant to wear it with bright red shoes, but I misjudged the length of the pant, forgetting these were "heels only" affairs.  Sigh.

I do feel like I'm channeling a sailor, though.  Makes sense, it's been raining for almost 2-3 weeks straight.

Capsule Wardrobe Day #3 - Now it gets interesting

No new pieces today... or for the rest of the week.  That's slightly nerve-wracking, since the weather has changed, and I somehow have to make a cooler weather outfit appropriate for a rehearsal barbecue than what I'd planned.

I'm wearing the top from yesterday (and since Jane said I could count camisoles as underwear, I decided to spring for a clean one today), and the dress from Monday.  This is my second favourite way to wear the dress (my favourite I don't think I'm going to wear this week, since this week is about stretching your wardrobe in ways you usually wouldn't), which is, of course, to wear it as a skirt.  I've worn it once before, with the straps tied in a bow, but I wanted them just hanging loose today to go for a more streamlined look.

I was a little worried about these shoes the first time I wore them.  I'd packed them for Scott's & my road trip for viewing wedding venues, and by the end of the weekend I was so tempted to go barefoot since my heels had blistered so badly.  However, I must build some fabulous callouses, because my ankles feel smooth, and there is barely a hot spot on my heel after doing some serious power shopping at lunch.

Capsule Wardrobe Day #2 - or the day I definitely bend the rules

I'm not counting the camisole as a piece of clothing.  It's one of those grey areas that I'm choosing to abuse to the nth degree.  You see, I don't want to be wearing this camisole... but unfortunately, this white sweater is a little stretched out with age, so it very definitely needed a touch of modesty.  And thus my pieces for today are:

Trouser Jeans - Smart Set
Plaid Jacket - Thrifted
White Wrap Sweater - Rickis

Also, did anyone else notice how lollipop-ish I look today?  Eeek!

Capsule Wardrobe Day #1

I won't lie, I feel like I'm cheating wearing this dress, since it's claim to fame is that it can be worn 15 different ways.  However, I'm hoping I'll style it differently each time, so it's a little less obvious.  And I'm justifying it because I have a rehearsal dinner barbecue to attend at the end of the week, so finding something work and play appropriate is a little harder than just work, or just play.

I feel French in this outfit today.  Despite my bilingual nature, I don't think I have a drop of French blood in me, which I find really disappointing.  In any event, I think it's the blue strips and the yellow shoes.  Of course, those are also the two things about this outfit that make me feel like a little kid.

So we have pieces 1 & 2 today
Dress - American Apparel
Shirt - Joe (yes, it was in the last capsule wardrobe, but I love the versatility of being able to wear it easily with both black and navy)
